Hi Neighbor
This week I wrote about how I'm planning on ingratiating myself to our new neighbors and public infrastructure in the US.
Before we get started I wanted to congratulate Shane Farnsworth (shout out his business Yum Town) for winning the Tycho album from last week's giveaway - selected randomly from the people who sent in their favorite music to have on while working. Great pick from him too - Everybody Loves To Boogie on YouTube. This one is particularly fun.
This week make sure to read til the end this weeks giveaway!
- Is new music killing old music? The article's argument is really about institutional failure - the music industry stopped believing in new music, algorithms reinforce what you already like, and radio narrowed its playlists. Which makes me think about how nostalgia clots and clogs our clarity and ability to truly evaluate things on the other side of our rose-tinted lenses - and how not keeping your receptors for wonder open can make you more jaded. Anyway, if you want to find some new music I've written in the past about how I keep my playlists filled with fresh material. Or you can listen to more Los Porcos - that'll do it.
- I love gear, and being prepared for a situation - be it as mundane as flying somewhere or as fun as a weekend out camping or a day out snowboarding, I get a little thrill from having the right piece of kit in the right moment. Mountain biking is an incredible application of this meta hobby of being a "gear guy" and I believe the early innovators in the sport were definitely gear heads as well - but this great photo essay of some of mountain biking's early innovators is a good reminder that you can just get out there and do most things in jeans.

- Very excited about NASA going around the moon again with the launch of Artemis 2 - for some reason that made me think of how little we have explored the depths of the ocean, our terrestrial dark side of the moon.
- Talking about space, go see Project Hail Mary. It's a true delight and better in theatres. I actually think it's my favorite scifi movie I've seen in theatres. Confirmed it by going twice. The practical effects make a huge difference. Also one of the most fun audiobooks I've ever listened to.
- We had friends over last night for dinner who are newly engaged and beginning to think about what they want their wedding to be. Talking about the possibilities - traditional and non-traditional celebration options - was really exciting, and it sounds like everything's on the table for them. Being now fully out of wedding season ourselves - and having it go very well, thanks to everyone on this mailing list who helped make it so - I'm morbidly curious. Do you have any great stories of very bad behavior at weddings you've attended? I'll send an Audible book credit to anyone who emails them to me or posts them in the comments below before April 10th.
