You're Already Doing It Wrong
Hi y'all,
- Honestly, I don’t really know how to sell this week’s post to you - so I’ll just tell you what it’s about and you can decide. At its core, it’s about building the muscle to notice the everyday tasks you’ve never treated as skills worth improving - and then actually doing something about them. My example is mowing the lawn, but the point is that this process pays off past the small stuff and spills into life, work, all of it. If that sounds like your thing, read You're Already Doing It Wrong.
- For anyone who's a Portlandia fan (how can't you be, how dare you not be, don't pretend you're too good for it), you'll be happy to hear that Fred and Carrie are now in a Ramones cover band called 'The Return of Jackie and Judy.' They're accompanied by another Sleater-Kinney member, Corin Tucker. This is the best video I can find currently.
- We've been getting really impressive thunderstorms here in Colorado over the past week. A few nights ago I decided to interrupt my nightly journey towards bed by taking a detour to the best room in the house for observing storms and turning the lights off. Sitting there, windows open, hearing the rain and hail pleasantly crash down, wowing at the frequent claps of thunder, I realized I had not one iota of an idea how lightning occurs. I mean, I knew it had something to do with a build up of static charge that then discharges, but, like…why? Well, luckily for you, my ignorance might benefit you here! Turns out that Lighting happens when colliding ice crystals and water droplets separate positive and negative charges. Then, when the voltage difference between the cloud and the ground becomes too great, it rapidly discharges, creating a giant electrical spark. Here's a great video about it from NOAA.
- Quick update on my Colorado Rockies, because I know that's actually why you all read this thing. They're still not good. BUT - they are not currently on pace to be the worst team in the history of professional baseball as they were at this time last summer. So I believe that's called improvement! I only bring it up because I went to see them in person for the first time this season this week. They lost - not a surprise - but I got to snap the below sunset picture. I also figured it's a good time to remind anyone visiting Colorado that Coors Field is a truly great place to watch a game - especially if you're not emotionally invested in the home team winning.

- This week's song rec is Red & Blue Jeans by the Promise Ring (Spotify, Apple). A fun example of late 90's midwest emo - a genre I've been enjoying living in for the past few weeks. This song wasn't on my radar until Macy and I took a road trip in the mountains and it was mentioned on an episode of Bandsplain. Shout out to Chris Ryan for having great taste here.
- Finally, I need your horror recs. Watched Get Out for the first time this past week (I know! 'You Haven't Seen X Movie!?' is a blog post for a reason). Having also watched Backrooms and Obsession over the past few weeks I'm ready for more fun stuff in a similar vein. Suggestions?
